Pulse-o-matic is a stylish and simple app that uses the camera to take your pulse. It’s easy to use - all you need to do is place your finger over the camera and Pulse-o-matic will display your heart-rate, graph-style, on the screen.

- While other similar apps will only work on the iPhone 4, Pulse-o-matic was originally designed on the iPhone 3GS (though we have, of course, tested it extensively on the iPhone 4 as well).

- Pulse-o-matic allows you to instantly tweet your pulse, so you can show the world that you’re still alive :)

- If you’ve been working out, or if you’re simply interested in keeping track of your heart-rate, you can use Pulse-o-matic’s logging feature to track your pulse over time, and export it later as a CSV.

- The advanced settings feature and the detailed, built-in help manual allow users to get the most out of the app, by configuring Pulse-o-matic in the way that works best for them.

- Pulse-o-matic’s sleek visuals were based on old medical equipment and the burnished metal finish, crumpled paper effects and gently pulsating lights make it a pleasure to use.

*How it works:

Pulse-o-matic works by measuring the amount of light passing through your finger. With each heart beat, the volume of blood in your finger increases temporarily. This increase causes more light to be absorbed. Thus each heart beat corresponds to a drop in brightness, as can be seen in the graph above.

This technique is similar to how pulse oximeters work.

*Limitations:

Unfortunately, the iPhone’s hardware is not designed for the purpose of measuring your heart beat and it is possible that certain users - young children, those with small hands and undead zombies - will have difficulty using Pulse-o-matic.
